Myths, questions and small skills

Plain-language answers you can share at an event or with your family. Nothing here replaces a conversation with a professional.

Myths vs facts

Mental illness means weakness of character.

Mental health conditions are health conditions — shaped by biology, stress and circumstances, and treatable like any other.

Only 'serious' cases need help.

Early conversations prevent crises. You don't need a diagnosis to talk to someone.

Talking about suicide puts the idea in someone's head.

Asking directly and calmly reduces risk. It tells the person they are not alone.

Counselling is only for the rich.

Tele MANAS is free, DMHP clinics at district hospitals are free, and Jeevani counsellors are free for students.

Medication changes who you are.

Treatment is decided with you. Ask your clinician about options, side effects and duration — that's a normal conversation.

If I ask for help, everyone will find out.

Helplines and clinics are confidential. You choose what to share and with whom.

Frequently asked

What actually happens when I call a helpline?

Someone trained answers, asks how you're doing, and listens. You can stay anonymous, and you can hang up any time. Tele MANAS counsellors speak Malayalam.

A friend told me they're struggling. What do I say?

Say you heard them, ask what would help, and stay with the discomfort instead of rushing to solutions. Offer to sit with them while they make a call.

How do I ask someone if they're thinking about suicide?

Ask plainly and calmly: "Are you thinking about ending your life?" Don't promise secrecy. Remove immediate means if you safely can, and call 112 if there is danger now.

Is an Ask Openly event a therapy session?

No. Events are conversations and information — never diagnosis or treatment. Every event points people to verified services.

Can I host if I'm not a mental health professional?

Yes. Most hosts are students, clubs and workplaces. You'll be asked to involve or arrange a professional, and all public-facing volunteers must be briefed first.

Small skills that help

A panic attack

  • Name it: "This is panic. It peaks and passes."
  • Slow the out-breath — in for 4, out for 6, for two minutes.
  • Ground with 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear.
  • Cool water on the wrists or face.
  • Don't drive until it settles; sit somewhere safe.

Burnout

  • Track energy, not just hours — note what drains and what restores.
  • Protect sleep first; everything else gets harder without it.
  • Renegotiate one commitment this week rather than all of them.
  • Move daily, even 15 minutes of walking.
  • Tell one person the real answer to "how are you?"

Feeling overwhelmed

  • Write everything down, then circle only what matters today.
  • Break the first item into a 10-minute version.
  • Set a timer, do that, then stop and reassess.
  • Postpone big decisions until you've slept and eaten.
  • If the feeling stays for weeks, book a free consultation.
